How this Wellington wedding cake maker and cake decorating class teacher got started donating birthday cakes to kids with a parent in prison - this is my story Hello I’m Bridget, owner, cake artist and chief dishwasher at Cake it Forward. I started on this journey by accident, watching decorating videos as a way to unwind from a stressful job. After a while I decided to move from watching to making and pretty soon we had more cake than we could eat at home. It was my kind and beautiful mum, Positive Pam, who suggested we donate birthday cakes to kids with a parent in prison through Angel Tree. I loved the idea of bringing happiness to kids on what could be a sad day and I loved the idea of showing our daughter the importance of giving back (and that we have enough shit). As soon as I started sharing our donated cakes on a Facebook page friends and family and their friends wanted to help out. Gorgeous Claire from Colab Cafe leant me her kitchen so I could sell cakes legally. In June last year we lost our beautiful mum after a short illness and two days later I delivered my first big wedding cake. As I drove home I decided this was my passion, life’s too short and I wanted to do this for real. Since then I’ve met lots of amazing couples and made some beautiful wedding cakes, I’ve also started teaching classes, which I love. So that’s me, still loving cakes and still donating birthday cakes to kids with a parent in prison and supporting other great causes each week. Thanks for reading and thanks to Monica Ferguson for taking beautiful photos and for pushing me to do scary things (like this blog). You can find out more about my story here:
