How to: Decorate cakes with flowers

I just love wedding cakes decorated with lots of flowers. They're so pretty and romantic. I used to be scared of using fresh flowers, until I learned a few tips

1. Find a great florist - an experienced florist will be able to prepare flowers for you, so that they are wrapped and wired. This means any nasty toxins won't leak into your cake.

2. Ask your florist to provide flowers that are individually. wrapped and wired - this way you can arrange the flowers yourself and play around until you're happy with the design

3. Order a wired cake piece - this way all you have to do is secure it to the cake, like the photo on the right. Easy!  

4. Use fakes - there are lots of gorgeous, real looking silk flowers and foliage. You still have to wrap them to make sure they're cake safe. You can do this yourself with plastic wrap and florist tape. Just make sure they're firmly wrapped so the plastic doesn't get left in the cake.
